Prof. Amaro Pereira

Economist and PhD in Energy Planning from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He was technical advisor of the Energy Research Company (EPE) and Research Fellow at University of Grenoble, in France. Currently, he is Associated Professor of the Energy Planning Program at COPPE/UFRJ, researcher at CentroClima and director of the Institute for Strategic Development of the Energy Sector – ILUMINA. He has experience in energy and environmental modeling, besides working in the areas of regulation of energy sectors, integration of new technologies and different energy sources on issues related to climate change.

JULIO CESAR PINGUELLI JACOMO
Julio is researcher at Coppe / UFRJ. He is interested in energy sector in general and Economics / International Policy, with emphasis in Petroleum / Natural Gas, Renewable Energy, Energy Economics and Technology, Regulatory, Energy Security, Geopolitics of Energy, Public Policy and Development, Brazilian Foreign Policy, and themes of South American Integration and Energy. Currently integrates researcher as the National Institute of Science and Technology for Public Policy, Strategy and Development (INCT / PPED), along the line of Public Policies, Institutions and Dynamics Technology and Agribusiness Research Group in International Politics, Defence and Security (GPPI ), linked to the Institute of International Relations at UFRJ (IFCHS / UFRJ). Alongside his academic work, integrates the State Government of Rio de Janeiro as Superintendent in the Secretariat for Energy, connected to the State Department of Economic Development and Energy (SEDEIS), acting mainly in industrial development (expansion of local content policies ) and chain oil and gas state, besides working with the consulates and international companies seeking to attract investments to the state.

 

 


Gabriel Cavados
Graduated in Mechanical Engineering by Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, with Master’s Degree in Energy Planning by PPE/COPPE/UFRJ. Has more than 8 years in the Brazilian energy sector, working in market development of new flexible power plants.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Mariana Weiss
Mariana Weiss is an Ph.D candidate in Energy Planning Program (PPE-COPPE) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), graduated from Fluminense Federal University (UFF) with a B.A. in Economics. As a researcher at the Laboratory of Interdisciplinary Environment (LIMA-UFRJ), she has experience in household energy consumption patterns and input-output analysis.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Gustavo Fuhmann
Chemical engineer graduated at Escola de Química of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2012) , which worked in the petrochemical industry . Master student of the Energy Planning Program (COPPE /UFRJ ) research in the area of thermal generation with natural gas , also at the interface between the gas , oil and electrical sectors. Currently researcher at FGV in the project about the Brazilian offshore oil.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Renewable Energy Sources

In this research, we analyzed the impacts of introducing renewable sources in the Brazilian power sector, considering the issues related to the intermittence. Also we developed studies of mechanisms to promote renewable energy, considering the national regulatory framework. In these studies, we also analyzed the perspectives for micro and smart grids.

Julian Hunt
Julian Hunt has Brazilian and English dual nationality. His education initiated in Brazil and finished in England with a doctorate at Oxford University. Julian graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Nottingham in 2008 with a first class degree and completed his Doctorate degree in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. During his doctoral research, he developed a decision support system with the objective to standardize complex, uncertain and long-term decision systems. A case study to validate the tool recommended optimum electricity generation technologies for ten different regions in the UK. Julian was an intern in the Energy and Climate Change branch of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) for four months. Currently Julian is doing his post-doctoral research with the intent to increase the Brazilian national grid energy storage capacity in the Energy Planning Program at UFRJ (PPE/COPPE/UFRJ) with an grant from the Science Without Borders program (CAPES).

 

 

 

 

Rafael Cancella
Master student of the Energy Planning Program (PPE / COPPE / UFRJ), holds a BA in Economics with focus on Energy Economics and Econometrics (time series). He was born in Lima - Peru, he is undergraduated in Mechanical Engineering at National University of Engineering (Peru), he has a graduated degree of Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on Thermosciences at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC - Rio) and graduated degree in Finance Energy by PUC - Rio. Currently he is a PhD student at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) where he is developing the theme of microgrids with renewable energy, furthermore he is a researcher at the Energy Program at Fundo Verde Project of UFRJ. He was a researcher at the Metrological Evaluation Laboratory and Energy (LAME) of Mechanical Engineering Department of PUC - Rio where he developed engineering and research projects related to the evaluation of energy systems in order to mitigate environmental impacts by implementing energy efficiency using various energy sources both in building and industry. He has experience and interest in the following areas: energy, economics and technology energy, distributed generation, renewable energy and energy analysis. He has published several articles in national and international journals and conferences as well as various technical reports on the various projects that he has participated.

 

 

 

Thauan dos Santos
PhD student of the Energy Planning Program (PPE/COPPE/UFRJ), is professor at the Institute of International Relations at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (IRI/PUC-Rio) and professor in the Department of Defense and International Strategic Management at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (DGEI/UFRJ). Santos is researcher at the Center for Integrated Studies on Environment and Climate Change (CentroClima/COPPE/UFRJ) and at the Center for Studies in Logistics, Infrastructure and Management (Celig/COPPEAD/UFRJ) with special focus on energy integration, international cooperation, supply and energy modeling (MESSAGE and LEAP).

 

 

 

 

 

ROSA ESPERANZA

Master student of the Energy Planning Program (PPE / COPPE / UFRJ), she holds a bachelor degree in Economy from National University of Colombia and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics from the same University. She has worked in the energy consulting and regulatory field in institutions such as the Regulatory Agency for Water and Sanitation (CRA), Planning Unit Mining and Energy of Colombia, Ecopetrol S.A. and Colombian Energy Observatory.  Her main research areas are: Energy Economics, Integrated Energy Planning, Economic Regulation and Climate Change.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RITA CAVALIERE
 BSc degree in Electronic Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1986) and MSc degree in Industrial Engineering from COPPE / UFRJ (1997). She is engineer at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She is currently working on his doctorate research at Energy Planning Program of COPPE / UFRJ developing the theme in Smart Grids. She has experience in Industrial Engineering, acting on the following topics: network industries (telecommunications and electric) and performance evaluation of enterprises.

 

 

 

 

 

CLEW Approach (Climate, Land, Energy and Water)

The main feature of this research is to use an integrated framework (climate, land, energy, water and the CLEW model) for evaluating energy programs. The goal is to assess the availability of resources such as land and water, and the impact on them, instead of just looking at energy.

 NATÁLIA PEZZI FACHINELLI
Natália is masters student in the Energy Planning Program at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His research focus is on the sustainable production of biofuels and the impact of ethanol production from sugar cane on water resources. His research interests also include the development of methodologies for assessing environmental impacts of energy sources.


 

 

 


Rodrigo Bellezoni
Rodrigo holds Bachelor degree in Ecology at Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, where he applied biostatistics methods to analyze invertebrate communities of the Caatinga biome as environmental quality indicators. During the masters on Environmental Engineering at UNESP, it was investigated the MSW final disposal, considering the water and soil environmental quality in small scale landfills. Works on Engineering, Sanitation and Environmental Planning areas, in the following specific themes: Municipal and Agroindustrial Solid Waste, Final Disposal, and Groundwater and Soil Pollution. He worked as researcher on IVIG (COPPE/UFRJ), participating in the “Conformity Program for Managing Solid Waste and Liquid Effluents on Brazilian Maritime Ports”, in cooperation to the Secretariat of Ports of the Presidency, when studied the treatment, final destination, and energy recovery from port wastes. Additionally, he is reviewer of the international periodic Environmental Earth Sciences. Recently, on Energy Planning area, he has studied Alternative Energy Sources, Biomass and Biofuels. As PhD student on PPE/COPPE/UFRJ, he analyzes the sustainability of sugarcane ethanol production, focusing on energy security and natural resources utilization.


MARTIN OBERMAIER
Martin Obermaier has over 9 years of experience in applied research and project development in Brazil and Germany. His areas of expertise include climate change adaptation and mitigation, strategic environmental assessment, rural electrification, and renewable energy markets, including biofuels. He studies these subjects using an interdisciplinary framework that combines both qualitative and quantitative analysis from economics, political and social sciences, and that includes field research.  In his ongoing post-doctoral research at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Martin studies the transferability of Brazilian bioenergy experiences to African countries as well as climate-proofing development in Brazil’s poorer regions, including the semi-arid rural northeast and vulnerable populations in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Martin is a member of the Brazilian Forum on Climate Change (FBMC) and has contributed to the current reformulation process of the National Climate Change Strategy. His extensive consultant activities include work for the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), IEA, OECD, and World Bank. His key publications include bioenergy development, sustainability standards, family farmers, rural electrification, conservation, and climate change adaptation.


Climate Change

In this research, we develop models and prospective scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions related to the energy production and consumption. In these studies, we also analyze the macroeconomic impacts of mitigation and adaptation measures to the climate change with the use of computable general equilibrium models.

RÔMULO NEVES ELY
Rômulo is a research associate at PPE, the Energy Planning Program at COPPE (Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering at UFRJ/ Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), where he is also studying for the PhD in Energy Planning, with one year researching in the Integrated Sustainability Analysis Group (ISA) from School of Physics at University of Sydney, Australia. His research area is energy and environment analysis, with strong emphasis in Input-Output. His PhD Thesis seeks in evaluating best income, labour and emissions multipliers from different kinds of Biorefineries based in sugarcane bagasse in Brazil. Rômulo holds MSc in Energy Planning from the same Institution (PPE) and a Bachelor degree in Economics at Economics Institute of UFRJ.

 

 

 

 

 

LUAN SANTOS
PhD student in the Energy Planning Program (PPE/COPPE/UFRJ), he holds a MSc at the same institution. He also holds a BA in Management with emphasis in Business Strategies by the Faculty of Management and Accounting Sciences (FACC/UFRJ), and has extension in the Integrated Master on Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal. Currently, he is Professor at FACC/UFRJ and reviewer of Revista Wolfius, Journal of Economics of the Institute of Economics of UFRJ (IE/UFRJ). He has published articles in national and international journals and he has some projects presented at Conferences, Symposiums and Meetings in Brazil and abroad. He has experience in public and private organizations, as well as in NGOs such as the United Nations (UN), Furnas S.A., COPPEAD/UFRJ, CIEDS - Integrated Center for Studies and Sustainable Development Programs, and ILOS - Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain. His main research areas are: Climate Change, Carbon Market, Natural Resource Management and Transport.
